Over half of parents let their children play 18+ rated games

Sampling over 2000 parents from across the UK, the survey reveals the stark difference in parental perceptions of games compared to other media. 86% of parents admitted they do not pay attention to age restrictions on games, compared to just 23% who stated they don’t follow similar guidelines for films. Indeed, just eighteen percent of parents said they would let a ten-to-fourteen year-old child watch an 18-rated movie.

The survey sampled parents of children aged between five and sixteen, 53% of whom were boys, and 47% were girls. Roughly three quarters (73%) of the respondents were mothers.

“What’s interesting is that the majority of parents follow film age ratings, but when it comes to video games they maybe aren’t as strict. It’s important to remember how impressionable children are; if they see behaviour or language in a video game or movie, they may mimic it.”

Not surprised in the slightest.  Parenting has gone downhill.

It surely did surprised me, every parent that i ever came across to, they are pretty much conservative in that aspect.

Well, really depends on the game e.g C&C Generals became rated in germany, while other titles with "gore" and "WMD's" stayed rating free.

"It’s important to remember how impressionable children are; if they see behaviour or language in a video game or movie, they may mimic it.”  - Yeah that's then....you know "parenting" comes into play, if you teach your kid values, morales and respect, games and movies won't make a "serial killer" out of your kid, not that they do in the first place.

A lot of parents don't really have a clue about age restrictions in games, whilst their children who do won't say a word, even my brother who has 2 children will let his boys play games which are rated 18+

Parents be like '' what PG?'' xP

It's not 18+ game like 18+ game. Sometimes, it depends on the genre (sexual, bloody, violent etc..).

Even if they "do well" on their parenting it's still an extra need of attention when the internet or videogames are involved. Not many workers will have enough time on their lives to take care of everything.

Not surprised, but I don't think it's that bad, I have friends whose parents let them play 18+ games since they were 7 years old, and they're very peaceful, without a single personality issue.

Also, these ratings are a joke, I have to be 16 years old to join the military, get a 5.56 assault rifle (only blank bullets for now), train to kill people but I have to be 18 to play Call of Duty, these ratings are a bad joke.
